How to Reduce  Sun Tanning in Summer

Summer means more outdoor adventures, but also the challenge of tanning.  Even a tan appearance would be great, but too much tanning leads to unseemly color mismatch, premature aging, and skin damage.

Healthy, lively skin is all about keeping your skin from being damaged by those harmful UV rays.  This is a reduction of summer tanning guide.

Understanding Tanning

When they are exposed to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun, they tan.  In its built-in protection against UV light damage, the skin overproduces a pigment that darkens the skin called melanin.  Though melanin protects the skin, excessive sun exposure can result in sunburn, overpigmentation, and long-term skin ailments.

Precautions on Daily Basis

1. Apply sunscreen daily

The best one-time tanning prevention is sunscreen.  Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of 30 or more.  Apply 20-30 minutes before exposure.  Reapply every two hours, and also after swimming or sweating.  Use water-resistant sunscreen for added protection.

2. Protective clothing

A second defense against injurious rays can also be derived from the use of sunglasses, hats and lightweight, long-sleeved shirts.  Limit sun exposure by using protective clothing and tightly woven fabric.

3. Get Yourself Some Shade During the Midday Period

10 AM to 4 PM when the sun is at its peak.  Stay indoors or in the shade at this time.  Walk under a tree cover or umbrella if you have to be outside in an attempt to minimize your sun exposure.

4. Moisturize Your Skin

Drinking water keeps your skin healthy and free of toxins. Dehydrated skin is more susceptible to sunspots. Drink foods that contain plenty of water like oranges, cucumbers, and melons to provide your skin with a maximum amount of water.

5. Exfoliate regularly

Exfoliate to avoid tanning and dead cells. Gently use a scrub with natural exfoliants like sugar, coffee, or oats.  Exfoliate two to three times a week to maintain your skin evenly toned.  Avoid over-exfoliating though because it will irritate your skin.

6. Use Natural De-Tanning Products

There are a variety of ways naturally bleach tanned skin:

Honey and Lemon Juice: Honey soothes the skin, and lemon juice has a natural bleach-like ingredient.  Shower after applying honey and lemon juice mixture to the skin for 15 minutes.

Turmeric with Yoghurt: Turmeric is anti-inflammatory, and yoghurt soothes the skin and removes tan.  Apply a mixture of turmeric paste and yoghurt on infected skin.

Aloe Vera Gel: Aloe vera moisturizes the skin and soothes it. For tanning reduction, apply fresh aloe vera gel every day.

Gramme Flour and Milk: Apply home-made paste in gramme flour and milk for fairness in tanned skin and once on the body from time to time.

7. Eat Healthy Continuously

A diet that is high in vitamins and antioxidants decreases tanning and healthy skin.  To restore damage caused by UV radiation, incorporate foods that are high in vitamin C (berries, citrus fruits) and vitamin E (almonds, spinach).  Flaxseeds and fish are excellent natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which repair skin.

8. Use Cooling Masks

Cooling masks also help in reducing sun tan and calming sunburned skin.  Some of the following home-made masks are useful:

Cucumber and Rose Water Mask: Combine cucumber juice with rose water to obtain a relaxing facial treatment.

Papaya and Honey Mask: Honey moisturizes skin, whereas papaya enzymes bleach it.

Potato Juice Mask: Bleaching compounds found in potato juice kill tanning.

9. Go for Professional Medical Treatment

Advanced treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser therapy can soften tanning in case home remedies do not work.  One must visit a dermatologist first prior to availing of any cosmetic procedure.

10. Steer Clear of Harsh Chemicals

Avoid the use of abrasive soaps, alchohol-based toners, and skincare products containing a high amount of chemicals because they could irritate sun-damaged skin.  Opt for natural, soothing, and moisturizing skincare products for your skin.
